The European Union, to me, is a crucial coalition in our world. As advocates for peace, justice, and economic security, the countries of the European Union work together to improve conditions for all people. Constantly evolving, the European Union strives to form successful relations between nations in both political and economic realms. As a person of European heritage, with ancestors from Ireland, Germany, and Poland, the European Union is not only promoting safety for the world I live in, but also protecting the cultures and histories of my ethnic background. From its earliest origins, the European Union has been a model of humanitarian ideals and practical commerce in the world. The first step towards a united European Union was Robert Schuman’s European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. The Union continued to expand and began to provide the basis for the European Union we know today. The Treaty of Maastricht formed the official European Union in 1993, and since that date, the Union has been increasing its size and success. One of the most important roles of the European Union is being a promoter of peace and security in the world. A fundamental way the European Union works for peace is through its regard and appreciation for the cultures and diversity of its members and the world. The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union upholds the promise that all members will be free to practice their own traditions and will be respected by the European Union itself. In today’s society, the European Union is a necessary agent in fighting terrorism at home and abroad. The establishments of the Schengen Information System and Europol provide effective means of reducing organized crime and fighting international terrorism. The Union also upholds the safety of justice and the rights of all people. This is evident through programs such as Eurojust, which mediates between countries for criminal investigation. Members of the European Union cooperate to establish mutual laws and international support for justice and security issues. Another essential responsibility of the European Union is its activity in world trade and the international economy. The collective countries of the European Union provide strength and stability in today’s economic market. When the members of the Union work together in its single market system, both international trade throughout Europe and the world economics benefit. This cooperative economic system not only creates new jobs and establishes monetary safety, but also provides a means for improving public works, such as international transportation. The European Union is continuously striving to become more competitive in the field of information. New advances in medicine, telecommunications, and technology would, in fact, be beneficial to the entire world. The European Union is essentially very important to me, focusing not only on the needs of Europe, but of the world. By promoting global safety and increasing reliable international affairs, the European Union is creating new opportunities for my generation and sponsoring the humanitarian ideals I believe would be positive in our world.
