To me, the European Union is a system to develop and maintain peace. Developed on November 1st of 1993, it now consists of twenty-seven independent states. The Union has continued to grow with Romania and Bulgaria becoming its newest members in January of 2007. It also consists of twenty-three different official languages creating such a diverse organization. It amazes me how twenty-seven states along with twenty-three languages all have one thing in common- the European Union. People of all different nationalities and religions can finally be united. War is no longer a huge issue among the states in the union; people in the world are finally able to work together. The French from France, the Germans from Germany, and the Italians from Italy (only but a few examples) all are beginning to understand each others language. According to statistics, around 56% of European Citizens can speak another language besides their dominant one. This shows that more and more people are becoming more diverse and wanting to learn new languages. Overall they are becoming more united as a whole.

The European Union not only benefits Europe but also the United States as well. The Union helps support University Exchange Programs such as ERASMUS for college students. Programs such as those have connected the United States with European countries. Citizens of the United States are able to study abroad and learn more about a different country while living their. It creates a sort of international bond between countries which benefits both. It creates both peace and makes each country that much stronger. No one country in the world today is dominating with power. Countries have now began to work together to prevent tyranny and create world peace.

The World has also become a much safer place. Advancements in medicine and technology benefit every country not just one. The United States used to be the most advanced countries in the World but other countries such as China and even Germany are beginning to catch up. For example the European Union currently funds programs to help develop renewable energy. Renewable energy would both benefit the environment but also decrease the dependence on imported fuels. I am thankful for the success of the European Union because it is making other countries, even my country stronger. While the union continues to advance in agriculture, public health, transportation, and education, new doors begin to open. They work towards developing a more variety of foods and creating safer foods. Also, it helps to find a cure for HIV/AIDS, a huge universal problem and to develop new improvements in transportation and education. I thank the Union because without it, the world would not be nearly as developed or as peaceful as it is today. It really has changed how everyone has lived since it first was developed in 1993.
