The European Union was created in 1993 by the Treaty of Maastricht. A total of twenty-seven countries in Europe have joined together in a nation somewhat equivalent to the United States of America. With the establishment of this organization, not only do the countries in this union benefit, but others, such as myself, benefit as well. This union not only shows the cooperation that the world is capable of constructing, but also how we can come closer to uniting this world as one and helping one another be the best we can be. Given that the European Union was set up in the repercussion of World War II to bring peace, stability, and prosperity to Europe, it shows that these once conflicting nations have gotten together to be at peace with one another. Wealthy and successful countries such as France and England join this organization having more of a loss than a gain, but instead of thinking just about their own country these powerful nations come together with the other less fortunate ones to aid them in a time of need. Born in the United States from a Peruvian mother and a Cypriot father, I did not grow up like most people in American society. My parents had their own ways of looking at things and did not care what the “American way” was. Having a father who is a Cypriot citizen, and chose to remain one even when living in the United States, is now assisting me in what I wish to pursue. Cyprus happens to be one of the twenty-seven countries united in the European Union, and with this said I can now get a European Union ID. With this ID card I can work in any country that is a part of the European Union and be treated as a European citizen. My dream is to study French for a few years in France, and maybe later on live there. Having this ID card and considered a European citizen will make life easier in a foreign country and definitely more enjoyable. Other than the European Union helping myself, I think this organization shows that if European nations can come together and negotiate ideas. Not only does this union show a type of team work, but also that peace and merging to form one single organization without losing the individuality of each country is possible. Like most other countries, European ones have fought and have had their disagreements in the past, but now with the creation of the European Union it comes to show that people out there do want to unite with other countries and do want to work together. As a frequent traveler, I find European countries to be the most interesting and pleasant to visit. Having visited France, Switzerland, England, and Cyprus, I find myself learning about the different cultures and traditions that each unique country has to offer. Now to see most of those countries coming together and working as one while still preserving their own distinctive customs is incredible and certainly does show that peace and cooperation is possible for anyone out there who wishes to see it. The European Union is a great inspiration to other countries and young individuals, such as myself, in showing that not everything has to be resolved in a conflict, but rather a unified union.
