If there is
one thing in this world that I can’t stand, it is
politics. All you even hear about is a bunch of rood politicians
arguing for weeks on end. Well, as I am growing up I can
tell this whole “politics” thing is actually
going to impact me in the near future. It’s evident
that although my perfect little world in Bay Shore is
right beneath my feet, something going on in other countries
could put quite the damper on my life. That is the exact
reason why I am becoming intrigued with some foreign affairs.
And, little did I know, The European Union happens to
hold many countries within it that keep our economy running.
How much America imports and exports with countries within
the Union really do decide how much value my dollar has.
Beginning with only 12 members in the 1950’s, the
European Union was designed to help maintain peace with
the countries in Europe. It is a fact that since the countries
in the Union are so close together in terms of geography,
had the union not been developed, any little quarrel over
boarders or trade could have resulted in mass violence.
It was the intent of the Union that drew more and more
countries into it over time. Today there are a total of
27 countries listed within the Union. Such countries as
France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, and the United
Kingdom all are involved. There have been many disputes
and conflicts that were resolved as a result of the Union.
One event that
can be considered the Unions’ epic achievement was
the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th 1989. This
was a symbol of the reunification of Germany which certainly
will be remembered forever. One thing that I really like
about the Union is its pure youth. Events that are going
on overseas and the economic situations are all not only
things that I am learning about in class, but things that
I personally feel the repercussions from. Anytime the
economy fluctuates from trade my own dollar can be affected.
Things that will happen in the future within the Union
as I grow up will become a part of my life and something
that I will actually live through.
